Colcacchio’s Pizza foro means you can eat the whole pie (like I didn’t before).
Colcacchio’s always seems to be pumping, even on a Wednesday after the lunch rush has died down, the pizza’s still ordered by the many and the lovers of Italian food visiting this classic Cape Town staple day and night are always there.
It’s the best pizza in Cape Town.
A few weeks ago, before summer started, Colcacchio’s hit up the trend of the “foro.” It mean’s hole, in your pizza, yes, but it’s hidden, and we’ll get to that later. What’s obviously important is that it doesn’t lack any flavour.
At the official Colcacchio pizza foro’s launch, enthusiastic Amy, seemed like her blood sweat and tears went into developing a healthy pizza with the same flavour but half the calories. I wonder how many taste tests were involved and how I can get that part of the job….
Sure, cutting a hole out of the middle of a pie seems like an obvious answer but it’s a bit more complicated, alright it’s not, there’s actually less pizza, but marginally, and it’s hidden by a nice healthy salad. So, it’s a compromise and a way for any normal person to not have to announce to the world that they are “eating healthy.” You can now just go out for a meal with your friends, get salad and pizza (good good pizza) and enjoy the meal without judging eyes and peer pressure to eat more things that are bad for you. Or, is that just me and my clearly terrible friends?
At the launch, a seriously awesome nutritionist, Dr Martani Lombard, sat and explained the trials and tribulations Colcacchio went through to make sure these pizzas were totally healthy and tasty. These pizzas are at least 515 calories or less when you compare a pizza that could be upwards of 1000 (not just at Colcacchio, and I can’t even imagine what Butlers must be).
So, while I might still be getting my entire 1000 calorie pizza, because the Foresta is just not something I can give up, I’d surely consider trading it in a few times for a bit of a lighter eat.
The Colcacchio’s team stoked about the new pizza. It was totally great to see love put into the food brought to the plate. It’s not that they just wanted to create some average healthy pizza, but wanted a pizza to actually be tasty.
As always, Colcacchio’s makes a killer product, crunchy beautiful crust, with fresh ingredients and a forever Cape Town classic.
